We need to be a professional SEO before handling any SEO project. We cannot become an SEO expert without practice or without handling any seo work. If you are good enough about your skills then you can handle any seo work. I cannot say that I am having 100% knowledge about SEO. As we know seo is an ocean. But you should have confidence about what you know. With this sprit you can handle any SEO project. 

I started handling SEO work 2years back. I have done many Mini projects. With the basics of my knowledge I can say there are many steps to handle an SEO project. I am writing this article to those webmasters, companies who are willing to hire an SEO company. I just want to say them, that before hiring an SEO company they have to fetch as much of information as they can about that SEO Company. Why I am saying this because many of friends are working in different seo companies. They never ever do On- page optimization. What most seo companies are going to do is just submitting our website to major search engine directories and  keeping Metatags. This is how most seo companies handle projects. Frankly speaking without on-page optimization we cannot do seo for any website.

Well, things which I am going to handle for SEO project:

Check HTML source code: As a webmaster I know how importance is HTML. Knowing html is a must. You need to compare your html source code with your competitor websites. Comparing source codes is a good habit.

How search engine crawls your page: You need to have basic knowledge about How search engine crawls your web page. This is very complicated task. You need to know how search engine crawl your page and how it works. You cannot get this theory anywhere. You need constant practice on indexing pages. You need to next algorithms. If you know how Google algorithm crawl your webpage then you are considered to be perfect SEO webmaster. Try to gain as many as differences between search engines. If you can find the major difference between Google and yahoo then you can easily index your web pages. There is a method to know how search engine crawl your page. The best method is to play with your own website

Bit of CSS : Try to know basics of CSS. I don’t want you to become an expert in CSS. Just edit your website headings, font style, font color etc. If you can do this then it is well enough. Well, this is very simple task. Every one can handle this task.

Web design: I don’t want you to focus in this field. If you are doing seo work then you should not consider web design. In my sense web design is least bothered. We have to challenge our competitors and that is our prime motto. Well, good design can attract your visitors but try to create a website with less design. If you are having a bit of error in your html page then it creates difficulty for search engines to crawl your web pages. Many webmasters are facing with this problem.

Keyword research: I love this task  i know keyword research is very difficult task, but still i love it. I have written many posts on keyword research. There are many ways to approach best keywords with high popularity, competitiveness and relevance. This step comes under pure on-page optimization and as you knows that this is very difficult to do keyword research. Keywords should be use at right position at right time. Without keyword research you cannot top in search engine results. You should know where to use keywords.You have to be very careful while doing this task. Always maintain good keyword frequency in post title, and first 1/4 of content. Why I am saying this because most search engines gives higher priority for title tags and first 1/4 of content. 

Competitive research: In this step you have to compare your keywords with your competitors. Know what they are doing. That’s enough.

Complete knowledge about penalties: You should come up with complete knowledge about Google penalties. Without knowing penalties please don’t handle any seo work. Why because many companies get their databases for millions of dollars. If we have done anything wrong then Google de indexes their pages and keeps their website in Google sandbox. And this will be the very worst case.

robots.txt : Try to understand what really robots.txt needs. And try to get how they are crawling our pages. If you can do this then you can easily index your client pages.

After completion of on-page you have to do Off-page. Off-page is nothing but Link building.
