Yes if you feel insecure than you can easily hide your shared file in windows XP from accessing other users on the network. You can assign network passwords in Windows 98 but in windows xp you can’t do that. Basically Windows Xp is having one feature with shared files. That is share all or share nothing. But Windows XP doesn’t have a feature which can secure a single folder. Well from the below trick you can hide shared file or folder in windows xp.
1) Right click on the folder or file which you want to secured and choose sharing and security.
2)Now enter the share name for your folder, drive or file name which you want to hide with a dollar sigh ($) at the end of the name. For example elechub$ .Name can be up to 12 characters inculding $ sign.

The folder or file will be in hidden format.This will not be visible to any user on your network. No one can access that folder until the name of folder knows.so make sure you choose a difficult name to guess if others trying to access it is an issue with you.
You can access that folder only by mapping it as a network drive.. Following steps will explain you how to open hidden shared file in windows xp:
1) First double click on My Computer and got to tools/ map network drive.
2)Now choose available drive as shown in below figure. And enter the name of the folder with dollar sigh ($) at the end.
3)Put checkmark at Reconnect at login .Which will automatically map your hidden file. And this file can be shared with every user.
4)Now click finish.
Note! If you choose not to reconnect at logon, you will have to manually re-map your share after every reboot.
