Following procedure explains you How to restore the operating system to a previous state in windows XP:
1. Log on to Windows as Administrator. After entering into windows click on Start-> Point to all programs-> Accessories-> Now point to system tools.
2. After opening System Tools click on System Restore. System Restore starts.
3. A welcome page opens for system restore. Now click Restore my computer to an earlier time (if it is not already selected), and then click Next.

4. On the System Restore page, click the most recent system checkpoint in the On this list. Be sure before choosing restore point. A System Restore message may appear that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK.

5. Now click next as soon as confirm restore point selection page opens. It takes time to restore data.System Restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration. It automatically restarts the computer as soon as system restore finished.
6. Log on to the computer as Administrator. The System Restore Restoration Complete page appears.

If you are facing any problems after restoration then you can restore Windows XP to a previous configuration that you do not want. Follow steps for undo restoration:

1.Log on to windows XP as a administrator.
2.Click on Start -> All programs-> Accessories-> Now point to system tools and then click on System Restore.
3. Same as above System Restore welcome page opens. Now click on Undo My Last Restoration, and then click next. A System Restore message may appear that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK.
4. Same as above confirm restoration undo page opens for confirmation. Click next to confirm and System Restore restores the original Windows XP configuration, and then restarts the computer.
5. As usual log into your system as Administrator. The System Restore Undo Complete page appears.
6. Click OK…. :)
